From Garage to Gourmet: Transforming a Tool Chest into a Kitchen Island

From Garage to Gourmet: Transforming a Tool Chest into a Kitchen Island

This tool box wasn't in the garage, ever!  I bought it brand new from Lowe's because I needed an island with more drawers in my ancient, but wonderful house.  My husband secured a sheet of plywood right on top of the chest and then a second larger piece of plywood for my counterspace.
Next came the vinyl top, which I bought online at you know where.  Can't say this is perfect, but it really gets the job done for the surface.  The best part of this little picture demo is the drawers.  See more pictures below.

In my kitchen, the drawers are in a corner of my basic L shaped kitchen, and it always seems like my husband is prepping his food right in front of them.  I have my own cutting board on the other side of the kitchen sink, and when ever I needed a different tool like spoons or spatula's whatever, I had to move him out of the way.  Now, I like my husband, and I don't like telling him to move when he's already hard at work in the kitchen.  What I don't mind is asking him to make me something, he always wants to please me.  Yes, I've got it pretty good, but it took over 35 years of training!

Moving the utensils and the spices and the dry food goods over to this drawer system made life so much easier.  I love the drawers, they open and close so easy.  Now we can both get to the drawers from our prep stations without pushing each other out of the way.  There's also room for a couple of stools for the kids on the other side.  Plus this whole thing rolls anywhere.

I now am the proud owner of 3 tool chests in my house, this one in the kitchen, next in my studio for longarm tools and thread, and one more for rulers, office supplies and many of the other essentials needed to operate my quilt studio.
